Hiking to the St. Johns River with Peanut & Charlie: A Dachshund-Friendly Trail in Central Florida
If you’re looking for a dog-friendly hike in Central Florida that feels like a true adventure without being too rugged for little legs, the Seminole County Environmental Studies Center is exactly what you need. We recently tackled the trail to the St. Johns River, and Peanut and Charlie were absolutely in their element.
The Trail
The route is wonderfully accessible, featuring paved pathways, wooden boardwalks, shaded canopy coverage, and plenty of opportunities to stop and take in the scenery. It’s the kind of trail that’s easy on dachshund paws while still feeling like a real Florida wilderness adventure.
One of our favorite parts was how the trail gradually transitions through different habitats before opening up to beautiful views near the St. Johns River.
The Wildlife
Florida never disappoints when it comes to wildlife, and this trail is no exception. During our hike, we spotted a variety of birds, rabbits darting through the brush, armadillos foraging along the trail, and several gopher tortoises soaking up the sunshine.
Every visit feels a little different, which is part of what makes this trail so special.
A Word on Safety
As with any Florida hiking trail, it’s important to stay aware of your surroundings. Posted signs remind visitors to keep a safe distance from wildlife and to be mindful of alligators near waterways.
We kept Peanut and Charlie leashed for the entire hike and recommend doing the same. Bringing plenty of water and avoiding the hottest part of the day will help keep both you and your pups comfortable.
Why We Love It for Dachshunds
The paved and boardwalk sections make this trail especially dachshund-friendly. The relatively flat terrain is easy on short legs, the shade helps keep temperatures manageable, and there’s plenty to see, sniff, and explore along the way.
For Peanut and Charlie, it was the perfect combination of adventure and comfort.
